If it quacks like a limping duck…

If it seems from the bolded, red-inked passages dropped here and there in my website that I might be edging toward retirement — congratulations, you’ve cracked the code! My plan is indeed to scale back, now that it appears I’ve succeeded in shaking some of my Social Security coins from the nation’s apparently doomed piggy bank. And when my business’s piggy bank at last runs dry, I’ll drop my S-Corp and go on for a while offering assessments only, and just enough of those to fuel my addictions to weekday breakfasts with the other geezers at the cafe up the street and/or cappuccinos and pastries at the coffee shop four blocks south of that.

Another of my plans is to resume banging my head against my own fiction, now that I no longer need to shepherd all of my dwindling energies for editing. That banging has already begun, and will continue at least long enough to see if I even really enjoy the work anymore and still have enough juice to get to the end of a few stories and maybe even the novel that’s been eating at me lo these many years.

If the idea of my coming discomfort in that vein serves up a bracing plate of schadenfreude to those who’ve put up with me picking at their efforts over the past 15 years — glad to be of service!
