I charge $90/hour for all work performed.
You’ll receive my estimated fee range after I see at least a representative portion of your manuscript and we have a chance to talk about your aims for it.
I’ll arrive at that estimated fee range by calculating my best guess at a per-word rate based upon my assessment of the state of the manuscript. If it’s already quite polished, I’ll use a lower rate to arrive at my fee estimate; if I judge that it will require a great deal of time for edits/marginal comments and the composition of a letter that includes extensive explanation/instruction, I’ll use a higher rate. To give you an idea of what the damage might be, I’ve done the math below for the range you could expect to pay, in total, for an 80,000-word novel.
HIGH LEVEL ASSESSMENT AND REVISION NOTES
Reality check and next steps
I typically charge between $0.013/word and $0.020/word for an assessment. For an 80,000-word manuscript, that would result in a fee of between $1040 and $1600.
Line edit + marginal notes + editorial letter
I charge between $0.024/word and $0.045/word for a developmental edit. For an 80,000-word manuscript, that would result in a fee of between $1920 and $3600. (A broad range, I know. Most settle around $0.037/word, or just shy of $3000 for an 80,000-word manuscript.)
I’ll ask for nonrefundable payment of 1/3 of my total estimated fee up front. When we finish, you’ll receive an invoice for the outstanding balance, payable within 15 days.
